What Just Shifted on Campus

Concordia University Nebraska (CUNE) is welcoming more than 110 incoming church-work students for the 2026–2027 academic year — the largest incoming class of future church workers in the university's history. Concordia University Chicago is marking 50 years of its Early Childhood Education Center and opening its "Careers for Christ" event this October for high school students exploring pre-professional church work programs. Concordia University Irvine is also in a 50th-anniversary season, and the LCMS U chapter network is actively recruiting new chapters to get listed.

Alongside LCMS activity, the ELCA's August 28 Prayer Venture is directing congregations to pray for the Lutheran Campus Ministry Network, which serves more than 175 colleges and universities through ELCA and ecumenical campus ministries. The combined signal: campus ministry is mobilizing across every Lutheran body at once.

Your Three-Step Deployment Plan

• Map your college-bound members. Pull your congregation's directory. Flag every student heading to a college or university this fall — including community colleges and trade programs, not just four-year schools. This is your contact list for the next twelve months.
• Connect them to a local LCMS U chapter or campus ministry. Email [email protected] to list your chapter or get tools for linking students to congregational life. If your students are landing at an ELCA-served campus, point them to the Lutheran Campus Ministry Network at one of those 175-plus schools. No student should arrive without a worship home already on their phone.
• Pray with intention this Sunday. Use the August 28 Prayer Venture as a built-in moment to lift up campus ministries by name in your service. Pair it with a tangible next step: a care package list, a monthly check-in rotation, or a Sunday school curriculum unit on supporting young adults in vocational discernment.

Keep the Pipeline Open All Year

CUNE launched its Church Work Letter of Intent program in 2024, where admitted church-work students receive an affirming letter and their home congregation is invited into the journey. Your congregation can replicate that spirit without a formal program: assign a mentor to every student currently exploring ministry, and have that mentor send one text per week through the first semester.
